Roger enlisted on 6th October 1913. He was 21 years and 3 months old, and was a Labourer by trade. He embarked at Southampton on 14th August 1914, then disembarking the following day at Boulogne, entered the war in France on 15th August 1914 as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 18th Hussars. On 24th May 1915 he was wounded in action, and was admitted into No 1 General Hospital on the 27th suffering from gas poisoning. He was transferred to a convalescent camp on 31st May but whilst recuperating was admitted into No 5 General Hospital suffering with influenza. From there, on the 7th July 1915, he was evacuated back to England, via the hospital ship "St Andrew". On 18th October 1915 he joined the hospital ship "Letitia" for duty. On 7th September 1916 he was admitted into the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, then on 9th December 1916 he was posted for duty with No 35 Coy at The King George Hospital, London. He was transferred to Section "B" Army Reserve on 12th May 1919. He was the husband of Nellie Warrell of 101 Camming Road, Wealdstone.
