John was educated in Dublin, and took the diplomas of L.R.C.S. and S.I in 1910. After acting as house-surgeon of Mercer’s Hospital, Dublin, and of Noble’s hospital, Douglas, he went in for lunacy, and was senior assistant medical officer of the Royal Ealswood Institution, Redhill, Surrey, and was employed there when he took a temporary commission as lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. on 1st January 1916. He was promoted to captain after a year’s service. John was the son of Dr Robert C and Georgina E Gage of Craiglands, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
