Archer was educated at Armagh RS & Kilkenny College and Dublin University, qualifying B.A. [Dub] in 1879, M.B., B.Ch. in 1881 and M.D. in 1885. In 1881, he was employed at Coombe Hospital. Dublin (T.C. Dub), and was later employed as V.D. Clinical Assistant, Meath Hospital. Dublin, vis Surg Chester General Infirmary. Archer was also a Justice of the peace and President of Chester Medical Society, and played rugby in the position of Forward for TCD & NIFC clubs, where he achieved Ireland Cap, No 54, no of Irish Caps -1 V’s.
