Horace enlisted into the Medical Staff Corps on 18th June 1887. He was 21 years old, and was a Carpenter by trade. He was transferred to Army Reserve "B" on 4th March 1903 but rejoined the Colours a few days later, on 13th March 1903. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 1st July 1908, then gained promotion to the rank of Corporal on 1st October 1909. He entered the war in France on 23rd August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 1st Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers. On 1st March 1915 he gained promotion to the rank of Serjeant. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For great bravery and consistent good work throughout the whole campaign, frequently under a very heavy fire, and notably on the 24th May 1915, during the heavy fighting near Wieltje. Sjt Stoner always shower conspicuous coolness and courage, and gave a fine example of devotion to duty." On 5th January 1916 he was transferred to serve with the 12th Field Ambulance. On 19th September 1917 he appointed acting Serjeant Major, then on 31st January 1918 he gained a commission of Lt & Quarter Master. He was the son of William Stoner of 105 Hollingdean Road, Lewis Road, Brighton, Sussex; and the husband of Ellen Edward.
