Other Information:Archibald graduated M.B., B.Ch., B.O.A. at the Queen's University, Belfast in 1914. He gained a temporary commission at the rank of Lieutenant on 1st February 1915 and served as Medical Officer for the 10th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles. He also served as medical officer in charge of a Divisional Stationary Hospital with the British Expeditionary Force. He was awarded the Bar to his Military Cross "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in dressing and evacuating thirty cases of another Division and over fifty of his own Bn. under most adverse conditions. His medical orderly was killed, leaving him single-handed, and one shell killed and wounded twelve of his stretcher-bearers.", and the 2nd Bar "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He worked untiringly under heavy shell and machine-gun fire, attending to the wounded of his own and other units. His fearless conduct undoubtedly saved many lives." Archibald relinquished his commission of temporary Captain on 28th February 1919 but was granted the rank of Major on 11th October 1919. He became a Public Health Officer in Derby and a member of the British Medical Association.
