Walton was educated at school in Bisley; at Epsom College, afterwards obtaining the Haviland Leaving Exhibition and proceeding to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree (Natural Science Tripos). He then became a student at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, entering in 1912, he qualified M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., in October 1915. During his studies, Walton became an excellent marksman, he shot for his school and represented Cambridge on several occasions, being in the winning team of the Universities of Empire Match in 1912. Additionally he was an active member of the Lee and Lewisham Rifle Club, and assisted in winning the Astor Cup for Kent. He was also a member of the Officers Training Corps and when he qualified immediately applied for a commission in the R.A.M.C. He was gazetted Lieutenant on 14th November 1915, and subsequently appointed Medical Officer of the 2nd Bn. The Seaforth Highlanders, entering the war in France on 10th May 1916. He was wounded on 11th July and died the next day at the 12th Field Ambulance. The Commanding Officer, Lt/Col F G Fitzgerald R.A.M.C. wrote “I thought you would like to hear about your husband’s death. I was up with him in the trenches the same afternoon, and it was in the evening that he was standing outside the headquarters’ dug-out, with Colonel Hopkinson, that a shell burst right beside them. The colonel had his coat set on fire and was badly hit. Your husband, who was just beside him, was hit in the head, neck and arm. and was quite unconscious till he died the following afternoon about 2.30 p.m. We buried him in the cemetery at Bertrancourt this morning. I got the pipers of the seaforths to play on the way. They played “Flowers of the Forest” and “Scots wha hae,’ and all the officers of my unit were there, and carried him to the grave.” Walton was the only son of William Wilson M.B., C.M. of 237 Stanstead Road, Forest Hill, London; and the husband of Emily Constance (daughter of Frank Mottershall) Wilson of "Castle Mount" St. Valerie Road, Bournemouth.
