John enlisted on 30th March 1902. He was 20 years and 1 month old, and was a Clerk by trade. He entered the war in France on 12th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 2nd Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby). On 9th January 1916 he joined the 17th Field Ambulance, and served with them until the end of the war. He returned to the UK on 1st March 1919, then was transferred to Section "B" Army Reserve on 29th March 1919. On 21st November 1919 he was permanently discharged from the Colours on being granted permission to reside outside of the UK.
