Alfred gained his medical education in Dublin, qualifying M.B., B.Ch., and becoming a Bachelor of the Art of Obstetrics in 1906. On 28th January 1907 he joined the Medical Services at the rank of Lieutenant. He served in India from 1908 to 1913, during which time he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 28th July 1910. Alfred served on the Western Front from 1914 to 1919, entering the war as the Regimental Medical Officer of the 1st Bn. South Wales Borderers. From 1917 to 1918 he was the Commanding Officer at No 7 Convalescent Depot, then in 1918 was posted to serve with the 3rd Cavalry Field Ambulance, remaining with them until 1919. During this time he served under the rank of acting Lieutenant Colonel from 3rd July 1917 to 20th April 1918, and again from 28th September 1918 to 15th October 1919. He then went to Egypt where he served up until 1922. In 1922 he was stationed in Constantinople, remaining there until 1924 when he returned to India until 1928 when he became invalided. He served with the British Army of the Rhine in 1929. On 25th May 1931 he served under the rank of temporary Lieutenant Colonel, then was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 15th June 1931. He served in China from 1933 to 21st November 1936, when he retired with pay. On 3rd April 1940 he was re-employed in rank of Major, He died in 1942 at Northampton.
