Edward was educated at St Vincent’s College, Castleknock, and University College, Dublin, qualifying M.B., B.Ch., and becoming a Bachelor of the Arts of Obstetrics in 1905. On 30th Jan 1906 he joined the Medical Services at the rank of Lieutenant, then served in India from 1907 to 1912, during which time he was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30th July 1909. When war was declared Edward was serving with the Western Command. He embarked for France on 13th August 1914 as Regimental Medical Officer for the 2nd Bn. Welch Regiment. On 21st December 1915 he began serving under the rank of temporary Major, and in 1915 to 1916 he became the Commanding Officer for the 9th Field Ambulance. From 1916 to 1919 he served with the 3rd Field Ambulance. On 22nd August 1916 to 23rd April 1919 and 21st June to 30th September 1919, he was serving under the rank of acting Lieutenant Colonel, during which time he gained the rank of Major on 30th January 1918. On 29th January 1919 he was awarded the French Bronze Medal for Epidemics, and in 1919 he transferred to served with No 64 Casualty Clearing Station, whilst also going to Germany. He served in India 1920-1924; in Ceylon 1927-1931; was Commanding Officer at the Connaught Hospital, Aldershot 1931-1934; and in India 1934-1938, as Assistant Director of Medical Services, Headquarter, Baluchistan District from 1936 to 1938, with a short break as acting Deputy Director of Medical Services, Headquarters, Western Command from May to October 1937. On 1st May 1938 he retired with pay, but rejoined on 3rd September 1939 and served again with the British Expeditionary Force in France, as Commanding Officer of No 10 General Hospital from 1939 to 1940. On 20th December 1940 he was Mentioned in Despatches. He reverted back to retirement with pay, and ceased to be on the Roll of Officers due to ill health on 20th January 1941. He died at Farnborough, Hants.
