Samuel took his medical degree at Victoria University, Manchester – entering in 1906, he qualified M.B., Ch.B. in 1911. He then took up house appointments at the Royal Infirmary, Preston, where he then started in practice. He was in practice at Didsbury, Manchester, prior to joining the R.A.M.C., when he volunteered for service on the outbreak of war and went to Aldershot on 10th September 1914. He went to Gaza with the 135th Field Ambulance, and in 1915 he was working in Serbia, where he was awarded the Order of St. Sava in recognition of his service there. He was later sent to Malta, and he also served as the regimental medical officer to the 11th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers. In May 1916 he went onto France and became the regimental medical officer of the 11th Bn. Welch Regiment. He was killed near Envilliers, Arras by a shell which fell close in front of the aid-post where he was dressing the wounded during a bombardment, dying almost at once from shock. His Commanding Officer wrote of the esteem in which he was held by his companions at the front. Samuel was the youngest son of Robert (Town Clerk) and Mary McClatchey of Portadown, Co. Armagh; and the husband of Glady Edith Restall (daughter of Samuel Scaife) of Wood House, Faringdon, Berks - married in September 1917.
