Alfred received his medical education at Glasgow University, where he gained the Dr Gibson bursary, and was resident at the Western Infirmary and the Eastern Hospital before graduating with distinction in surgery in April 1915. His wish was to become a medical missionary, and was President of the Christian Endeavour Society and of the Young Men’s Guild at Glasgow. He was also active in the social work of the Lodging House Mission. As soon as he qualified Alfred immediately joined the R.A.M.C., Special Reserve. He trained at Eastbourne, then went to France three months later attached to the Grenadier Guards as their medical officer. He had previously been reported as missing before it was confirmed that he had been killed. Alfred was the second son of Thomas and Mary Bisset Logan of 10 Regent Park Terrace, Strathbungo, Glasgow.
