Lionel qualified M.B. Durh - 1912 (University Durh & Leeds). He was Senior Hon Surgeon at Beckett Hospital, Barnsley and Hon Physician at Leeds General Infirmary (1921 Medical Directory). Lionel was commissioned Lieutenant on 28/10/1914, he was the second RMO to serve with the 1/19th London Regiment and went overseas with them on 10/3/1915 until late 1916, and again in March 1917 and early 1918 (Special thanks to Charles Fair). He was promoted to Captain on the 28th April 1915 (November 1918 Army List). From the 20th January 1923, Lionel served as Captain in the Indian Medical Services (LG 2/3/1923).
