He was employed for three years in the laboratory at the Enfield Grammar School, then later obtained a post with Messrs. Mathey Johnson of Hatton Garden, Gold and Silver Assayists. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C., T.F. on 5th August 1914, and was embodied into the 3rd London Divisional Field Ambulance. He served in Gallipoli from 24th July 1915, when he became attached to the 1/11th London Regiment. On 14th August 1915, he was appointed acting Corporal (with pay), after Cpl Gibbs had gone sick. He was killed by shrapnel. Major W A Malcolm wrote to Gordon’s family: “All I can say won’t make the loss to you any lighter, but it will be a consolation to you to hear that he did his duty nobly, and died a soldier’s death. A better man I never knew, or a more unselfish.” Private S R Brady wrote: “Gordon and I were sitting in our dug-out when a shrapnel shell burst near by, and he was hit, with fatal results. I extend to you my heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your son and my best chum, but hope you will derive some consolation from the fact that he worked hard and well out here, and died an honourable death, which was practically instantaneous.” Gordon was the only son of Benjamin (a Greengrocer) and Mary Ann (daughter of Robert Carter of Swaffham, Norfolk) Robinson of 160 Chase Side, Enfield, Middlesex.
