Walter was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen and at the Middlesex Hospital, where he obtained the Conjoint qualifications in July 1915. He qualified M.B., B.S. later while on active service. He joined the R.A.M.C. (T.F.), and was attached for nine months to the 3rd London General Hospital, then on 25th May 1916 he was posted to France and served with a casualty clearing station. In 1918, Walter was transferred to serve as medical officer to the London Regiment. He was killed by a shell whilst attending to the wounded near Albert. He was described by one of the surgical chiefs as as a delightful dresser, always helpful and inspiring. Another, who had provided him with a lot of experience in practical surgery, wrote “He was able, skillful, and excellent in his work. But beyond all that he had special personal charm which endeared him to all who knew him.” Walter was the son of Walter and Sarah Lloyd of 12 Lammas Street, Carmarthen.
