James was educated at Queen's College, Belfast, and took the Scottish triple qualification in 1893. Before the war he was in practice at Regent's Park, London. He joined the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) as lieutenant and medical officer of the Herefordshire Regiment on 1st August 1903, becoming Captain on 1st November 1906, and then promoted to Major on 5th August 1914. He entered the war in Gallipoli on the 9th August 1915. James received the Territorial Decoration. [Information kindly provided by Maggie Tyler]
