Thomas enlisted on 22nd October 1915 and was posted to 7 Coy. He was 25 years old, a clerk by trade, and living at 27 Kenilworth Road, Rathgar, Dublin at the time. He was transferred to Devonport on 3rd November and served in the UK until 7th September 1916, when he was posted to serve on H.M.H.S. "Aquitania". Thomas was in the UK from 6th October - 4th December, and during this time was admitted into the Military Hospital at Devonport, suffering from Influenza. He returned to H.M.H.S. "Aquitania" on 5th December and served there until 1st January 1917, when he returned again to the UK. He spent some time in the Rest Camp at Blackpool Depot. On 4th April 1917, James was posted to serve on H.M.H.S. "Salta". He was reported missing at sea by the D.D.M.S. in a memo on 10th April 1917, after the ship struck a mine and sank half a mile north of the Whistle Bouy, Havre, on the same day. James was the son of the late Michael and Elizabeth Brennan of Dundrum, Dublin.
