William was educated at the Public School in Aberdeen and at Gordon’s College, he then became an Insurance Agent with the Liverpool Victoria Legal Friendly Society. He was examined on 22nd June 1916 at the Recruiting Medical Board, Aberdeen, for war service but was not mobilised by the R.A.M.C. until 22nd August 1917. He was 38 years and 210 days old at the time. He was posted to “K” Coy on the 24th, then on 25th February 1918, was posted to serve on the Hospital Ship “Glenart Castle”. He was reported missing, believed drowned the next day due to the sinking of the Hospital Ship by enemy submarine. His death was accepted by the War Office on lapse of time. William was the son of Joseph and Mary Jane (daughter of William Hamilton) Hay of Bucksburn; and the husband of Maggie Ann (daughter of James Cruickshank) of 76 Leslie Terrace, Aberdeen - married at Bucksburn on 18th July 1907. They had two sons.
