On 2nd March 1916, at the age of 24 years and 11 months, Roy enlisted into the RAMC but was not called up for service until 11th December the same year. On 13th December he was posted to "Y" Coy and then transferred to 311th Field Ambulance on 23rd January 1917. On 23rd August 1918, He was sent to 2nd Training Battalion in Blackpool where he remained until 3rd September when he was posted to serve with 326th Field Ambulance. Roy was reported missing, believed drowned when the RMS Leinster was topedoed. His death was accepted by the War Office on lapse of time. Roy was the son of Herbert Black of Castle Street, Woodbridge, Suffolk. [Information sources: CWGC, Soldiers Died and Roy's service record (List of R.M.S.
