Walter enlisted on 20th October 1915, he was 20 years and 10 months old, a printer by trade, and living at 242 Seaside, Eastbourne at the time. He embarked at Southampton on 6th March 1916, disembarking at Havre he entered the war in France on 7th March 1916 with 134th Field Ambulance. On 10th August, Walter was admitted into his unit suffering with influenza. He was given rest and discharged back to his unit but on 14th January 1917 was re-admitted suffering with scarlet fever, and this time was evacuated back to England on 24th February 1917. Arthur was then posted to serve on the Eastern Front and was on board the Hired Transport "Transylvania", when it was proceeding to Egypt with reinforcements, and was sunk by a torpedo by the German U-boat U-63 off Cape Vado, a few kilometres south of Savona. He was the son of Alfred and Janette Berry; and the husband of Beatrice Louise Ethel Perry of 42 Bourne Street, Eastbourne.
