Thomas was educated at Bedford Road, Board School, Bootle. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 22nd February 1915 and gained promoted to Corporal on 19th August. The next day, on 20th August 1915, he entered the war on the hospital ship “Cambria”. He gained promotion to Serjeant on 22nd November 1915. Thomas was admitted into the Military Hospital, Western Heights, Dover with symptoms of spinal meningitis on 4th July 1916. He never left the hospital, dying there of fever. Capt H W Smith R.A.M.C. wrote to Thomas’s wife: “The Hospital Ship Cambria came in this morning, when we heard that Sergt. Bennett had died yesterday morning. As Commanding Officer of the troops I have come up here to offer you the sincere sympathy of all on board, officers, sisters and men of the ship’s crew, who were all very attached to your husband...” Thomas was the second son of John Henry and Agnus [daughter of Edmund Alderson] Bennett of 15 Clare Road, Bootle; and the husband of Jessie Thomasine [2nd daughter of William Griffiths, a Licensed Victualler, of Oldham] of 28 Brook Road, Bootle - married at Bootle, Liverpool.
