Alexander was educated at George Heriot’s School, entering in 1892 to 1897. He then became a Photographic dealer by trade, working in Newcastle. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 4th January 1916. He was 32 years old. He joined at Sheffield on the 7th, then went to “R” Coy for his training. Alexander first saw active he service on the Hospital Ship “Warilda”, serving from 26th August 1916 to 27th August 1918. During this time he was appointed acting Lance Corporal on 11th June 1917, then acting Corporal on 8th December the same year. He then went to France and served with No 8 Rest Camp and No 57 General Hospital - both at Marseilles. On 5th May 1919, he was appointed acting Serjeant. From 5th June 1919, he transferred to served on H.M. Ambulance Transport “Valdivia “ and remained with this ship until 30th October 1919 when he demobilized at Prees Heath Camp. Alexander was serving his 28 days demobilization furlong when he was suddenly taken ill and died of Cerebra-Spinal Fever at his home 11 Princess Street, Stirling. He was buried under private funeral arrangements on the 8th. He was the second son of Mr and Mrs D A Johnston; and the husband of Helen.
