Other Information:

Standish received his medical education at Trinity College, Dublin, qualifying M.B., B.Ch. and B.A.O. in 1896. Later in his medical career he qualified as a specialist in State Medicine at the R.A.M. College. He entered the Medical Services at the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant on 28th January 1898, then gained promotion to the rank of Captain on 28th January 1901. In 1904 he served East Africa, Somaliland 1904, being mentioned in despatches for his actions there [L.G. 2/9/1904]. He gained promotion to the rank of Major on 28th Oct 1909. When war was declared, he assembled at Netley to form the unit No 3 Hospital Ship - “St Andrew”. The ship first sailed on 24th August 1914. On 1st March 1915 he gained promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, but served under the rank temporary Colonel from 30th October 1916. Towards the end of the war he served as Assistant Director of Medical Services, Allied Corps Constantinople, and Assistant Director of Medical Services, Cavalry Division during the Army of the Rhine. On 1st January 1919 he received a Companion Order of St Michael and St George. In late November 1920 he was invalided from the Black Sea to Malta due to sickness. He died at the Military Hospital there. He was the eldest son of Capt Standish de Courcy O’Grady and Charlotte, daughter of G P Houghton; and the husband of Esther Alice, the only daughter of Col Philip Doyne Vigors.
