John had previously served with the Territorial Force. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 7th November 1914, he was 26 years old. He joined No 8 Coy the next day. John embarked at Southampton on 23rd March 1915, then disembarking the next day at Havre, entered the war in France on 24th March 1915. He served with No 18 General Hospital, and was admitted into his unit on 26th October 1916, suffering with a strain to his knee which developed whilst he was on duty. It was established that the injury was trivial and would not interfere with his work and so he was discharged on the 4th November. He reported sick and was admitted again on 11th August 1917, this time the diagnoses was he had Osteochondroma knee and he was evacuated to the UK, returning on 8th September 1917. On 24th September 1917, John was admitted into hospital suffering with a tumour of the jaw. He remained in hospital for 324 days, being discharged on 13th August 1918, with a diagnosis of having sarcoma of the jaw. He was discharged ‘No longer physically fit for war service on 13th August 1918. John was the son of Joseph and Sarah E Galley of 26 Andover Street, Pitsmoor, Sheffield.
