William was appointed by Middlesborough Borough Police on 16th April 1905 and by the Watch Committee on 27th April 1905 as PC 81. He was 5 ft, 10 inches tall. He lived at 54 Gresham Road, Middlesborough. William started his 6 month probation period as a 5th class PC and was appointed 4th class PC on 1st December 1905. He was promoted to a 3rd class PC on 29th November 1906. On 26th September 1907, William was commended by the Watch Committee and awarded a gratuity of 10 Shillings 6 pence for tact displaying in addidting in the apprehension of a notorious criminal upon a charge of shop-breaking. The officer was allowed to accept a gold signet ring presented by the owner of the shop premises. William was promoted to a 2nd class PC on the 28th November 1907 and then to a 1st class PC on the 19th November 1908. On the 30th May 1915, William resigned to join HMF and enlisted into the RAMC. He returned to the police force on the 2nd January 1919, and was given a new collar number 97. On 23rd January 1919, he was commended by Mr Ronnebeck, Zetland Building for his promptitude in discovering an outbreak of fire at Zetland Building at 12.55am on the 19th January. Commendation endorsed by the WC who allowed the constable to retain for his own use the sum of £2 forwarded by Mr Ronnebeck. William was promoted to Sergeant 7 for a 12 month probationary period on the 18th December 1919. [Information researched and provided by John Grainger]
