Richard was called up for service on 16th November 1916. He was 24 years old; was a Ledger Clerk by trade; and was living at 30 Caslingford Road, West Green, N at the time. He joined on 20th November 1916, and was posted to P Coy for training on the 22nd. On 30th November 1917 he embarked at Southampton, then disembarking at Havre the next day, entered the war in France on 1st December 1917. He then travelled from Havre to Rouen. Arriving on the 4th December at Rouen he joined the Cyclists Base Depot. He was then posted to serve with No 35 General Hospital, joining them on the 9th December 1917. On 11th March 1918 he was posted to serve with the 131st Field Ambulance. He was wounded in action on 17th September 1918 suffering the effects of being gassed but returned to duty on 20th September 1918. On 22nd February 1919 he was posted to serve with the 130th Field Ambulance, then posted again on the 20th March 1919 to serve with the 141st Field Ambulance, joining them in the field on the 21st March. On 15th May 1919 he proceeded to No 64 Casualty Clearing Station for instruction in Public Blue Lamp room work. He returned to the UK on 22nd September 1919, then was posted to the Military Hospital Oswestry at Kimmel Park. He was posted to Class Z Reserves on 1st December 1919.
