Charles Brewer was a pacifist and refused to fight but volunteered in 1915 to join the medical services. The army, however, put him in the Welsh regiment! Charles would not pick up arms and was eventually transferred to the RAMC. He served in Salonika with the 36th General Hospital, attached to the Royal Serbian Army. It is possible that he may also have been in the 28th General Hospital. Charles was awarded the Serbian medal (Milosh Obilich Medal for Bravery) for his actions during a zeppelin raid on the 36th Red Cross hospital during March 1917. Also with him were Pte. Blackett 9101982 & Pte.W. Whitbread(26029?). He survived the war and worked for the Mental Health Department in Birmingham until his retirement. He also worked for the YMCA in Erdington. Charles married Kate (nee Phipps) in 1914 and they had two children. He died at his home, 14 Silverbirch Road, Erdington. He was the son of John & Emily(nee Scott)Brewer. [Information kindly provided by his granddaughter, Christine]
