Bertal was educated at Trinity College, Toronto, qualifiing M.B. in 1883 and M.D., C.M. in 1884, and at the London Hospital, taking the L.R.C.P. (Ed) in 1884, the M.R.C.S. in 1885, and the D.P.H. at Cambridge in 1902. He gained a commission within the R.A.M.C. on 5th February 1887 and was promoted to Captain on 5th February 1887. He served in the Chitral campaign of 1895, and from 1898-1899, saw active service at Sierra Leone, where he was severely wounded. The British Medical Journal of 4th June 1898 reported that whilst severely wounded at Karene, thigh fractured and wounded in chest, "he continued to give surgical aid to his wounded comrades." On the 5th February 1899, Bertal was promoted to Major and then to Lieutenant Colonel on 21st June 1911. At the outbreak of war, Bertal became the officer commanding No 9 General Hospital. He disembarked from Southampton on 21st August 1914 and entered the war with this unit at Le Havre, France. On the 1st March 1915, he was promoted to Colonel, and from 1st April became the A.D.M.S of the 6th Division. He then took over as the officer commanding No 10 General Hospital and the A.D.M.S. of the British Base H.Q. at Marseilles from February 1918. He retired from service on 10th September 1919. He was the son of the Rev. G H Scott, vicar of Gringley-on-the-Hill, Notts. He died in Ealing.
