Stuart was educated at Central Public School, Gartly; at Gordon Schools, Huntley; and at Aberdeen University - as a student of medicine from 1915 - 1916. He had previously served with the South African Light Horse and Egyptian Transport - from 1897 to 1898 and 1899 to 1906. He enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 14th October 1916. He was 18 years and 7 months old, and was living at 9 Chichester Road, Kilburn at the time. He was posted to "Y" Coy, and after training was drafted overseas, embarking on H.T. "Ceasarea" at Southampton on 19th April 1917. He disembarked at Le Havre the next day, and then went to Marseilles, where on the 16th May he embarked on H T "Minnetonka" and went to Salonika. He disembarked six days later, entering the war in Salonika on 22nd May 1917. Stuart was admitted into his unit on 7th September 1917, then on 8th January 1918, was transferred from the 48th General Hospital, suffering with Tuberculosis Adenitis of the neck. On 1st April he was evacuated on the Hospital Ship "Braemere Castle" to Malta and was admitted into St Georges hospital. He was posted to serve with No 30 Coy in Malta on the 29th and was struck off strength of the British Salonika Force. On the 26th October he was admitted into St Andrews hospital, Malta suffering with influenza, but on the 5th November was transferred to the hospital 'Cottonera', having contracted tuberculosis again. He was discharged on 21st January 1919 and was invalided home. On 8th March 1919 he was discharged from the army 'No longer physically fit for war service'. He never recovered and died at Noranside Sanatorium, Forfarshire. Stuart was the son of the Rev F W and Mrs S K Stuart of United Free Church Manse, Gartly, Aberdeenshire. He was buried by his father.
