William enlisted into the Connaught Rangers on 28th September 1914. He was 40 years old and a Cooper by trade. He was transferred to serve with the R.A.M.C. on 24th September 1915, then entered the war serving on a hospital ship on 8th October. On 16th December 1915, he was reported as being dangerously ill with pneumonia and was admitted into his No 15 General Hospital. He died of pneumonia at 5.30 a.m. 7 days later. He was the husband of Catherine Kiely of Little Patrick Street, Waterford.
