William enlisted on 23rd February 1916. He was 23 years and 328 days old; was an Insurance Clerk by trade; and was living at 16 Irene Road, Fulham at the time. He was placed on Army Reserve until 10th January 1917, when he was mobilized and then posted to “T” Coy for training. On 16th April 1917, he embarked at Southampton with No 54 General Hospital, then disembarking the next day at Havre, he entered the war in France on 17th April 1917. William was admitted into his unit on 29th November 1917. He was discharged from hospital on 1st December then went on leave for 14 days. He returned to active service on 15th April 1918 at the Base Depot in Rouen, and was posted to serve with the 35th Field Ambulance, joining them ‘in the field’ on the 25th. He was wounded in the abdomen with a piece of shell, and died of wounds in No 1 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. William was the fifth son of James and Janet Stewart of Viewhills, Newton Stewart, Scotland. He was the third son who fell in the war.
