Other Information:

George enlisted on 16th September 1898. He was 18 years and 8 months old, and was a Barman by trade. He was at the time serving in the Middlesex Regiment militia. From 21st January 1902 - 22nd February 1907 he served in South Africa. He gained promotion to Lance Corporal on 1st January 1910, then to Corporal on 1st January 1911. On 21st August 1914, he embarked at Southampton with No 8 General Hospital, arriving in Havre the same day he entered the war in France. On 5th July 1916 he gained promotion to Serjeant, then on the 8th was transferred to serve with the 100th Field Ambulance. * He is mentioned in the 100th Field Ambulance war diary on 11th July 1916 due to arriving for duty from Rouen. [*Information kindly provided by Bill Evans] On 11th December 1916 he was admitted into the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. He was evacuated back to No 4 General Hospital the same day and then back to England on the 30th. George returned to France on 21st April 1917, serving with No 57 General Hospital. He was discharged from the army on 8th September 1919. He was the son of Joseph Ward on 49 Charlotte Street, Whitechapel, London E.
