John enlisted to serve with the Notts and Derby Regiment on 5th October 1914, however on the 10th October he was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters. He entered the war in France on 27th August 1915, remaining there until 24th August 1916 when he was returned home. On 29th March 1917 he was transferred to service number 321965, serving with 523 R. Employment Co and 360 Labour Corps until 24th August 1917. John then transferred into the R.A.M.C. and was posted to 1st Training Battalion, Blackpool. He was appointed acting Lance Corporal on 8th September 1917 but reverted back to Private on 27th December 1917. He served overseas again from 3rd April 1918 until 15th December 1918, his unit when he returned home is listed as 2nd Stationary Hospital. John served at home from 16th December - 12th January 1919, when he was transferred to Class Z - Army Reserve. He was the husband of Mary Siddal of 15 Wellington Street, Tunstall, Staffs.
