Edward enlisted into the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance, T.F. on 5th April 1911. He was 18 years and 7 months old, and a machinist by trade. On 24th April 1913 he joined the Special Reserve so was mobilized to serve abroad at the outbreak of war, entering the war in France on 15th August 1914 with No 9 Stationary Hospital. He was posted to serve with the 2nd Field Ambulance, joining them in the field on 5th November 1914. On 8th October 1915, it was reported by the officer commanding the Bearer Division that Edward had received a gunshot wound to his right leg. He was evacuated back to the UK on 12th October, from No 4 General Hospital, via the Hospital Ship “St Andrew”. He rejoined the 1st Northumbrian Field Ambulance on 21st March 1916, however shortly after, on 4th April 1916, he was discharged from service due to the termination of his period of engagement.
