Harry was a member of the St John’s Ambulance and wished to join the R.A.M.C. He enlisted on 23rd February 1915, he was aged 22 years and 8 months, and a Woolsorter by trade. He left England for Malta on 1st August 1915, arriving on the 7th and served as a Nursing Orderly with No 1 Malta Coy in a hospital there. During September 1915, Harry began suffering from dysentery through handling dysentery cases. He also contracted Malaria during the beginning of May 1917 and suffered several attacks of both from then on. Whilst in Malta he learnt French and could read and speak fairy fluently. He tells of an incident in Salonika when a Turkish officer surrendered to his British counterpart but the two had no common language . Harry conversed in French with the Turk and translated for the British officer. On 2nd July 1917, Harry left Malta for Salonika, arriving on the 9th and served with a Field Ambulance until 18th December 1918. He was demobilized on the 25th February 1919, having served for 4 years and 1 day. Harry was the son of Rebecca Bolton of Hill House, Oxemhope, near Keighley.
