Ian was in practice at Juniper Green, Midlothian when he took a temporary commission in the R.A.M.C. as a Lieutenant on the 14th April 1915, he was promoted to Captain after a year's service. He first joined a field ambulance with the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front but transferred to the Egyptian Army, where he was appointed to take charge of an isolation Camp (typhus fever) for Turkish prisoners at Khan Junis, near Gaza. Ian succeeded in completely stamping out the typhus without losing a single case, but contracted typhus fever himself. He died at Kantara. Ian was the elder son of the Rev. Norman Campbell (Minister of the United Free Church at Juniper Green, Edinburgh) and Annie Murray (daughter of David Livingston) Macfarlane of Smeaton Park, Inveresk.
