Edgar enlisted on 23rd November 1915. He was 19 years and 6 months old, and was a Clerk by trade. He was appointed acting corporal on 25th December 1915. Serving with 19 Coy, he was posted to Sheffield on 12th May 1916, then returned to Aldershot on 6th September 1916. 18 days later, on the 24th, he embarked at Southampton for Alexandria, disembarking there on 7th October. On the 17th he embarked again for Bombay, where he stayed until 7th November 1916, when he travelled to Basra, arriving on the 15th. On 28th November 1916 he was posted to serve with the River Streamer Convoy Unit, and served with them until the end of the war.
