Robert had already served right through the South African campaign, he left the army and worked as a scaffolder at Messrs Cranfield's Mill and then for Mr Sadler, a builder in Ipswich. At the outbreak of war Robert volunteered for service again, he arrived in France on the 27th August 1915. Robert was gassed three times when in France but continued to serve, he left France for Italy and was in Italy at the time of the Armistice. It was the after-effects of the gas, however, that caused his death. Robert was buried with full military honours - his coffin covered with the Union Jack, bourne on a gun carriage, with Bearers, firing party and a trumpeter.
