Charles was educated at Grammar School, Colyton, co. Devon. He intended taking Holy Orders, and was entered upon the Worcester Diocesan list of canditates to be trained for the Ministry. He joined the R.A.M.C. on 16th September 1914. Then entered the war in Egypt on 4th June 1915. He was transferred to German East Africa in December 1916, where he took part in the fighting there. He died at No 84 General Hospital, Dar-es-Salaam from pheumonia contracted while on active service. His Commanding Officer wrote: "I have known your son Charlie since we mobilized at Aldershot, and would like you to know how highly we appreciated his work while with this unit." A comrade wrote: "He was laid to rest in the New Military Cemetery within sound of the waves which gave him so much pleasure in life. Four of the unit acted as pall-bearers, and all the officers, N.C.O.'s and men of his unit paid a last tribute to a gallant and dearly loved comrade. To us he was always Charlie, dauntless in danger, brave in adversity, a stauch friend and a true comrade." Charlie was the eldest son of Walter James Willis Gush of Marine Cottage, Beer, co. Devon by his wife Elizabeth Frances, 2nd daughter of Thomas Cleaver; and brother to Cpl A W Gush, M.M. with Bar.
