James was educated at Rossall School and at St Bartholomew’s Hospital - entering as a student in 1895. He obtained the diplomas of M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1901, then graduated M.B. the same year, and M.D. in 1909. After he qualified her served as a house-surgeon and resident medical officer to the gynecological department at St Bartholomew’s, and as senior house-physician to the West London Hospital. He joined the West African Medical Staff and became a senior medical officer in the southern provinces of South Nigeria. He entered the war on 3rd June 1915. James obtained a temporary commission as Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. in 1916, and was promoted to temporary Captain after a year’s service in Salonika. He then returned to German East Africa, where he died whilst holding the post of Principal Medical Officer in that province. James was the son of James Luterall and Mrs L F Bailey of 11 Herne Hill Mansions, Herne Hill, London.
