William qualified L.R.C.P. in 1884. He took up a temporary commission within the R.A.M.C. on 1st April 1915 at the rank of Lieutenant, then gained promotion to Temporary Captain on 7th April 1916. On 29th March 1918 he was appointed acting Major whilst specially employed, then relinquished his commission of temporary Captain on 14th November 1920 but was granted the rank of Major. He served in the Military Hospital, Lewisham and the Guards Military Hospital, Caterham. He was the husband of Alice Abbott of "Drynham" Oatlands Chase, Weybridge, Surrey.
