James was educated at Burnley Grammar School and Manchester University – entering in 1909, he qualified B.Sc in 1912. He enlisted on the 4th November 1915 into the Army Service Corps. He was 25 years and 331 days old; was a secondary teacher by trade; and was living at 34 St. John’s Road, Selly Park, Birmingham at the time. He first served with the ASC Supply (Service No. S4/146108) and disembarked from the UK on 24th December 1916 and arrived in Basra in April 1917. He was transferred to serve with the R.A.M.C., when still in Basra ‘in the interest of the service’ under Army Order 204 of 1916, on 1st August 1917. He was discharged on 3rd June 1918 suffering from dysentery and arrived back in the UK on 22nd February 1919. He died of acute influenzal pneumonia, contracted on the voyage home. James was the son of James and Susannah Kippax of 13 Powell Steet, Burnley and the husband of Mary Kippax. (Information researched and kindly provided by Chris Ludlam)
