Luke was appointed by Durham County Constabulary on 5th September 1912 as PC 348, 3rd class constable, and was stationed at Darlington. At the time he was living with his wife Gladys, aged 30 years, at 22 Kitchener Street, Darlington. On the 1st December 1913, Luke was promoted to a 2nd class PC but on the 22nd May he was disciplined, along with PC 867 Charles E Gibson for being drunk when they should have been on night duty at Darlington, and improper conduct at their station on the 16th May. He was reduced to 3rd class PC, severely reprimanded and cautioned. Gibson was also reduced to 3rd class PC and ordered to reside at the police station. On the 1st November 1914, Luke was promoted to 1st class PC. He resigned on the 1st November 1915 to join HMF and entered Egypt, theatre of War Mesopotamia. Luke died at the Military Hospital, Adelaide Street, Blackpool, his wife Gladys was present at this time. His death was certified by Dr Louis M. McIntosh who recorded his death as 1) Malaria 2) Acute nephritis double pneumonia, and no post mortem was necessary. His death was registered at Fylde, Blackpool the next day.
