Charles entered the war in France on 12th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 1st Bn. South Wales Borderers. On 12th August 1915 he was serving with No 17 Casualty Clearing Station when he was admitted into No 2 Stationary Hospital.
