John was educated at Sherborne School and Dublin University, qualifying M.B. Dublin in 1884. Whilst at school, he played rugby at Forward for TCD. His achievements were 3 Irish Caps, V's - E; 1884, S: 1882 and 1884, and Ireland Cap, No 95. John had held a commission within the Medical Services from the 30th January 1886, becoming Surgeon Major on the 230th January 1989, Major on the 30 January 1989 and Lt/Col on the 30th January 1906, and served in South Africa from 1899-1901. He retired on pay on the 4th February 1911 but was recalled to service when war broke out and was temporarily employed for the duration of the war.
