Robert is believed to have joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1914 and stayed for one month suffering from a heart valve complaint, re-joining the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at a later date. He entered the war in Egypt on 22nd November 1915. His campaign medals are engraved with his RAMC number but it is not known when he transferred into the RAMC.
