James was educated at Banbridge Acadenical Institute and Queen's University, Belfast. He was a rugby player, being one of eight players to play for Ireland before and after WW1. James gained the rank of temporary Capt in the RAMC on 10th June 1917. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions in the Balkans and Black Sea.
