John was educated at Trent College and Dublin University and qualified M.B., B.Ch., B.O.A. in 1914. He joined the RAMC, Special Reserve, at the rank of Lieutenant on the 5th August 1914, and mobilized on the 28th, eventually entering the war in France on the 11th May 1915. John was promoted to Capt on the 1st April 1915, and although he served as acting Major and Deputy Assistant Director of Medical Services during 1918, he did not gain the rank of Major until after the war on the 5th August 1926. John played rugby for Monkstown under the position of Forward. He played for Ireland on three occasions in 1914 and played for the Army against the Barbarians in 1915. After the war, John left France and served in India until 1929. From 1930 - 1932 he was stationed at Louise Margaret Hospital at Aldershot, then left for Gibraltar, returning in 1937 and stayed again until 1939. John also served during World War Two with 7 General Hospital from 1939 - 1940; the 11th General Hospital from February - May 1940; as Assistant Director of Medical Services at Headquarters from 1940 - 1941; at the war office from 1941 - 1943 and in North Africa from 1943 until the end of the war. By this time he has reached the rank of Major General. John was enrolled a Companion of the Bath (CB) and a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), and Kt Comdr Grand Cross Greek Royal Order of the Phoenix on the 19th November 1948. John died at Milbank, London.
