John's occupation, as a single man, was a hurdle maker. He was 6 ft, 1 3/4 inches tall. John married whilst a serving officer, the details of wife were not recorded - they had three children. John was appointed by Durham Country Constabulary on 15th June 1908 as PC 502, he served as a 3rd class constable. On the 30th September 1908 he was at Bishop Auckland. He was promoted to a 2nd class PC on 1st January 1909, then 1st class PC on the 1st May 1910. On the 18th & 20th January 1912 and 13th February 1912, he was commended by the CC and awarded the sum of 25/- for displaying pluck and promoptitude in stopping runaway horses. In June 1912 he was at Hamsterly, at the time he was living at 1 Surtees Street, Bishop Auckland. On the 29th October 1915, John resigned to join HMF and enlisted into the RAMC. On the 15th December 1919, he re-joined as PC 499 and was stationed Bishop Auckland. On 9th September 1920, he was at Ferryhill Satation. On the 1st May 1922, he was promoted Segeant 82 to West Hartlepool. On the 10th September 1923 he was in Newtown. On the 3rd May 1926, John was commended by Chief Constable and Magistrates for tact and perseverance in effecting the arrest of five persons on charges of poultry stealing and receiving at Elwick. On the 7th August 1930, he was commended by the magistrates in connection with a case of indecent exposure at Hatlepool on the above date. [Information researched by John Grainger]
