William’s occupation was a soldier, he had previously served 3 years with the RAMC. William was appointed by Durham County Constabulary on 22nd November 1913 as PC 942, 3rd class constable. On the 2nd February 1914 he was stationed at Bishop Auckland, and on the 1st June 1914 he was promoted to a 2nd class PC. On the 22nd June 1914 William was disciplined, the offence was neglect of duty at his station and telling an untruth in connection therewith. He was fined 5/-, severely reprimanded and cautioned. On the 4th August 1914, William was recalled to the colours to rejoin his unit in the RAMC. He rejoined the Police Force on the 6th March 1919, as 1st class PC 928 and was stationed at Bishop Auckland. Over the years William was stationed at Spennymoor, Shildon, Fulwell Mill, Whiteleas, Burnhope, Hamsterly Colliery, and Piercebridge. On the 1st February 1936, he had completed 22 years service, he retired on pension on the 20th March 1939 but as re-admitted as 1st Police reserve, No 0137 and stationed at Darling, a post he held until he resigned on the 30th September 1940.
