Charles’s occupation was a gardener. He was 5 Ft, 10 3/4 inches tall and married with one child. Charles was appointed by Durham County Constabulary on 7th October 1912 as PC 860, 3rd class constable. On the 21st October 1912 he was stationed at Darlington and was promoted on the 1st April 1913 to a 2nd class PC, and then on the 1st November to a 1st call PC, after being transfered to Bishop Auckland in January the same year. On the 15th November 1915, Charles resigned to join HMF. He was re-admitted as 6 years PC 860 and was stationed again at Bishop Auckland, a post he held untl 10th August 1920 when he went to Blackhill and then to Highgate on the 9th May 1930. Charles retired on pension on the 14th February 1938 but was re-admitted as 1st Police Reserve number 0124 and went to Consett. He finally resigned on the 21st April 1944.
